What's in a name?

Category musings
Before I delve into this week's SnTT, I wanted to mention my desire to rename this blog. The domain name is staying the same... after all, it's easy for me to remember. But I'm tired of the blog name.

Many moons ago I signed up for my very first ISP account on uswest.net (back when there was a U S WEST... going even further back, anybody out there actually remember Mountain Bell? Pops, I know you do). Ah, nostalgia. Anyway, having been given space to create my own web site, I threw a couple of .htm's out there. Realizing that nobody would see it - because there was nothing there worth looking at - I called it my dark little corner of the web. Tucked away, lurking in the shadows, my own little digital dust bunny. For some reason, I went with a really dark color scheme anyway (black background, grey text, etc.), so the theme seemed apt.

Since then, the 3 page site gradually morphed into this blog, but for some reason the name carried over. But the name just doesn't seem to fit anymore. I've got my pastel scheme goin', my colorful little terror Muppets, and my blue sky header graphic with wispy little clouds. And now that a few people wander by occasionally and peruse my musings, the title no longer even seems conceptually accurate. So I consulted Laura. Jointly, we came up with the new name: "Tip of the Iceberg".

I'd recently noticed my tendency to post about barely thought out ideas and concepts... sort of a "what if?" and "Look what I found, wonder what we could do with that?" Sometimes nothing comes of these ideas, sometimes they bear fruit, and occasionally somebody takes an idea and runs with it... which is rather fun to watch and be a part of. Although thus far this hasn't been entirely intentional, I've decided now that I want it to be. Upon occasion, I'll still toss out a full application, but I think that's what OpenNTF is for; my goal for this blog is to wander around our digital ocean, stumbling upon the occasional iceberg, and sending up a flare for others to see. Not in a Republican fear-driven sense (oops, my inner hippie leaked out there for a minute), simply warning others of what to avoid - although there's a valid need for that from time to time, of course - but more of a search for hidden treasure that lies locked away underwater.

Now if I could only remember where I put my snorkel.......
