suggest Lotus Symphony and Domino Designer to Ninite

Category grassroots
Earlier today, Carl Tyler posted about Ninite, a single site to go to for downloading a bunch of applications at once. For example, when setting up a brand new machine, you could check off Firefox, Pidgin, VLC, GIMP, OpenOffice, AVG, 7-Zip, and so on, and then click "Get Installer" and get a single executable that installs everything you need except your fringe applications... for example, for many of you, that includes Domino Designer.

But Designer is now free. And Lotus Symphony has been since its original release. At the bottom of Ninite's home page, they include a form to "Suggest an app". I've already suggested both Designer and Symphony, and am requesting that all of you do the same. Not only would it be quite convenient for us to include those apps in a bulk install the next time we need to outfit a new machine, wouldn't it be great if all of Ninite's visitors saw free Lotus products, treated as true peers to software they've already heard of, offered in a context where those visitors don't have to click through 37 pages on IBM's site just to download the software?

Gravatar Image1 - I think the issue is IBM requires you to register to get them.

Gravatar Image2 - this idea is ingeniously simple!

Gravatar Image3 - @1's right. If IBM's cool with it, I'll happily click for it.

Gravatar Image4 - @1,3 - that's part of my goal here... that this might serve as just one more reason for IBM to simplify the download process. What's better, reaching more people - and establishing a larger mindshare - or having contact information for a smaller set of people who made it all the way through the download process without getting so bored or annoyed that they left without ever getting to use the software?

Gravatar Image5 - Did suggest also lets see whats happening Emoticon

Gravatar Image6 - Done! Actually, when I installed my Windows 7 machine the other day I used ninite to get most of the apps that I use on a daily basis. No hassle with clicking, etc... Just one installer giving all the defaults with no "additional" pieces like toolbar. I first heard of ninite from a tweet from Mitch Cohen.

Gravatar Image7 - The policy of requiring registration to download IBM/Lotus software has been challenged countless times. Ed and others at IBM/Lotus have held firm in their belief that it is necessary. It doesn't matter what arguments are presented or how many people object, they can't wrap their heads around why it might be a problem. To them the benefits outweigh what they consider to be a minor annoyance. They truly don't get it.

But I do applaud your efforts. Emoticon If you do get approval from IBM to make this happen I'll stand behind it.

Gravatar Image8 - Permission or no, I still voted for both.

Hey Ed Brill, can you make an exception for Ninite?
