IE8 released
Category microsoft
Internet Explorer 8 was officially released at 12 PM EST today... per my usual compulsive need to perform a zero-day upgrade whenever a new version of any software I use is released, I installed it at 11:30 AM. Seems Microsoft is gradually trying to erode their reputation of chronically delaying releases by occasionally posting something for download a half hour before they promised they would. Now comes the fun part: seeing how much of every web app I support breaks.
One rather odd quirk after the upgrade: once I'd followed the somewhat vehement recommendation to restart Windows as soon as possible, when I logged back in, all my desktop icons were right-aligned instead of left-aligned. No big deal, I just right-clicked the desktop and selected View - Auto Arrange, and they went back to where they'd previously been. I rarely launch them from the actual desktop anyway; I tend instead to use the desktop taskbar toolbar (say that five times fast) to view them as a menu. But if your organizational habits require that your desktop icons remain precisely where you put them, you may want to avoid upgrading until you find out from others whether this behavior is typical or just a fluke.
