the next step in the journey
Category career
As some of you have already noticed, I left redPill and joined Best Methods. This career move was the hardest decision I've had to make in a very long time, but I firmly believe it was the right decision for me. This may surprise or even confuse some folks, coming so soon after the formation of redPill... in fact, a few within the "Yellow Bubble" may even make a snide remark or two because they've learned that this gets them attention. But here's what I know to be true:
redPill has the right mix of talent and vision to bring to market an offering that has the potential to fundamentally alter how Domino applications are modernized. This was true last week; it remains true today. My non-disclosure agreement with them is still in effect; were that not the case, I'd be tempted to describe exactly what makes their approach so visionary. As it stands, I'll let them reveal it when the time is right.
These guys are amazing developers, and amazing people, and it's been a privilege and an honor to be their colleague. This coming Monday marks the 15th anniversary of the beginning of my career... I've worked with Nathan for 40% of that time. We've challenged each other in ways that can't realistically be measured, explored myriad crazy ideas, and accomplished the seemingly impossible more times than I can count. Peter's insight and attention to detail has been a huge influence on me in the years that we've collaborated, and I know without a doubt that I'm a better developer today because of the ways in which he's taught me to question my assumptions. Keith was hired by GBS specifically to become my apprentice. In the two years since, it's been a pleasure to watch him become a master in his own right and, in many ways, surpass me.
It's going to be bittersweet for me to watch from a distance what emerges from their lab. But I know I helped to lay the foundation, and I'm proud and grateful to have been able to contribute up to this point. And being unable to take credit for the rest won't diminish my excitement as I hear about the ways in which they're helping customers realize exactly what Domino is capable of.
Best Methods has an awesome team. I'm thrilled to be joining a company that is so talented and customer-focused. Every new job I've started has required me to step up my game in new ways, and I can already tell that this will be no exception. My experience and perspective will bring them some new ideas and capabilities, and there's a lot that I'll be learning from them. In particular, they're really strong in an area that has been a key focus for me the past five months, but they've explored a side of it that I haven't yet had an opportunity to. Was that vague enough? I'll find out if I can share some additional detail about this, but it's probably safe to say that you'll get to see some cool examples of what I'm hinting at if you wander by our pedestal at Connect. And, yes, while I'm not presenting this year, I will be at the conference. As always, I'm looking forward to reconnecting with many old friends and establishing new connections. <pun />

I don't think there are many folk that would have snide remarks. We all want everyone to do well.
